Discover Volubilis, the impressive Roman ruin that stands proudly on a fertile Moroccan plain. It is the best-preserved archaeological site in the country, and its fame is largely due to the beautiful mosaics that can still be seen in the same place where the ancient artists placed them. Recognizing its importance, UNESCO declared Volubilis a World Heritage Site in 1997.
Located just 32 km north of Meknes and close to the holy city of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, Volubilis can easily be combined into an unforgettable day trip from Meknes or Fez.
Much of the sprawling 40-hectare city remains buried, with excavations covering about half of the surface. The most famous structures are in the northern part of the site, away from the main southern entrance.
Plan your visit: Beware of the strong summer sun: water and hats are a must. Spring offers a gentler experience, when wildflowers add touches of color to the ancient stones and the landscape is a vibrant green. The most magical times to stroll through Volubilis are early morning or late afternoon. In the evening, watch the last rays of sunlight bathe the columns in golden light for a truly special moment.
Feel free to wander the grounds, although access to certain delicate structures may be restricted. Near the entrance, a small museum displays some of the recovered treasures, including exquisite bronzes. Note that many other important finds from Volubilis are on display at the Rabat Archaeological Museum.
