Today you will depart for Fez in the morning, passing through numerous charming villages in the Rif Mountains. The first stop will be in Volubilis, an important archaeological site that houses the best preserved Roman ruins in this part of North Africa, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. Afterwards, you will head to Meknes, where you will visit the famous Bab el-Mansour gates and the tombs of Moulay Ismail. After lunch, you will continue to Fez, where you will spend the night in a local Riad in the Medina.
Get ready to explore Fez, Morocco’s oldest and most culturally rich city, with an expert local guide. You will stroll through its intricate alleys and visit landmarks such as the gate of the Royal Palace, the ancient Jewish quarter (Mellah), the prestigious Al Karaouine University, the oldest in the region, the fascinating Tanneries, the exquisite Attarine museum and the Mausoleum of Moulay Idriss, an important pilgrimage site. You will spend the night in the medina, immersed in the authentic atmosphere of Fez.
Today, the journey will take you through varied and spectacular landscapes. First, you will pass through Ifrane, a charming winter ski resort built by the French in the 1930s, evoking a picturesque Swiss village. Next, you will drive through the imposing Middle Atlas Mountains, where you will spend most of the morning enjoying the beautiful cedar forests, rugged rock faces and picturesque Berber villages.
You will then stop for lunch in the town of Midelt, famous for its fossils and delicious apples. In the afternoon, you will continue to Merzouga through the Ziz Valley and Erfoud, the capital of dates, arriving in the evening in Merzouga, where you will stay in a local hotel near the breathtaking dunes of Erg Chebbi.
After breakfast, we will begin exploring the region, starting with a visit to a village of Malian descendants, where we will immerse ourselves in their unique music and lifestyle. Next, we will explore the Miffis mines to witness their operation first hand. Then, we will venture into the captivating dunes of Erg Chebbi to enjoy breathtaking views of the desert, pausing to share a cup of tea with the local Bedouins. Before returning to our accommodation, our guides will give us a demonstration on how to ride camels and a safety briefing, preparing us to explore the enigmatic sea of sand that is Erg Chebbi. Tonight, we will sleep under the stars in a traditional Berber tent.
After sunrise in the desert, we return to the hotel for a shower and breakfast. Then, we visit the bustling market of Rissani before heading towards the Todra Gorges. We will walk along the streams of the canyon and continue to the Dades Gorges to spend the night in a local Riad.
With a full stomach after breakfast at the hotel, we will enter the Dades Valley, heading to Kalaa M’gouna (the City of Roses) and the cinematic Ouarzazate. The Route of the Thousand Kasbahs, which we hug through the valley, will be a visual feast, offering endless moments to capture the essence of Morocco. A brief foray into the Atlas Studios of Ouarzazate will prepare us for the main course: Ait Ben Haddou, the largest kasbah in the country, an adobe colossus declared a World Heritage Site.
We will imagine the time when T-Hami El Glaoui, powerful Berber lord, used this fortress as a stop on his caravan route. After lunch, the landscape transforms as we cross the High Atlas Mountains, a land of towering peaks and Berber villages clinging to the slopes. Finally, Marrakech will welcome us in the evening, marking the end of this unforgettable day.
